Display Empty Removable Drives:
Windows 7 will not show empty drives by default, so if you connect an empty drive to your PC, don’t worry, just go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View and uncheck “Hide empty drives in the computer folder”.
This doesn’t seem like a good idea and it should not be default setting, because it will be hard for inexperienced users to figure it out. I bet a lot of users will return their newly bought drive thinking it’s broken.
How to Hide or Show Empty Drives in Windows 7 Computer Folder:
- Open Folder Options, and click on the View tab.
- To Show Empty Removable Drives - Uncheck the Hide empty drives in the Computer folder box, and click on OK.
- To Hide Empty Removable Drives – Check the Hide empty drives in the Computer folder box, and click on OK.

I kept trying to “hide empty or removable drives” for months with no success. I then noticed I had turned on “show hidden files folders or drives”. The “show hidden files folders or drives”, needs to be turned off or it overides the “hide empty or removable drives”. Hope this makes sense. Both of these are located in Tools>Folder Options>View
