Dealing With Long Tail Keywords

long tail keywords OM’s Tuesday SEO Special : How to Target Long Tail Keywords SuccessfullyWhen you do the keyword research, you may often be interested in keyword terms that have hundreds of daily searches on an average, and tend to ignore the low competition terms. But, when you really try to analyze which web pages on your website generate maximum revenues, you’re going to realize the importance of long-tail keywords.
Let’s take a look at a small example here. If you’re trying to build-up a site on a particular automotive say ‘Ford Explorer’, you’ll create a homepage with the nitty gritty about the vehicle, and perhaps few pages on info about various generations of the vehicle, its parts, accessories, and so on.

  • First off, getting first page ranking for such a highly competitive term ‘Ford Explorer’ is going to be impossible for quite a while.
  • Secondly, if a visitor searches ‘Ford Explorer’ in google (or any other search engine), and arrives at your site, he/she doesn’t seem to be sure of what he/she wants. On the other hand, someone who searches 1994 Ford Explorer is quite sure that he/she wants information on a particular model.

If you’ve provided decent info, and given listing of used 1994 Ford Explorer models, it’s quite likely that the visitor may look at the listings, and in an effort to find more info, he/she may explore other pages of your site.

  • In the third case, if you look at a long-tail keyword like 2010 Ford Explorer Sport Review, it’s pretty evident that the visitor is even clear about the specific trim he/she wants to buy or research. This category of visitors result in maximum conversions, and this is what you should be really targeting.

Even if the search term “2010 Ford Explorer Sport Review” has 7 average searches (just an example, not accurate number), and the parent term ‘Ford Explorer’ has thousands of daily search volume, the former KW turns out to be much more profitable to target, not to mention ease of hitting the top of google results within a short span of time.
It is also worth noting that targeting extremely broad niches like web technology trends may not be beneficial for SEO of your blog, but it may help in improving the reader-base for sure.

Using a Professional KW Tracking Tool

Now, when you really want to target long-tail keywords, it becomes important to use a professional KW tracking & research tool. The free versions like WordTracker trial version are good enough to research broader keywords, but they don’t show you the inside stories. This is when a paid license of Wordtracker or SEOToolBook becomes crucial.
However, if you’re ready to do the hard work, you can perform few google searches to check out the popular KW phrases, and then with hit and trial try to collect long-tail keywords by narrowing down your focus.
You may also want to use Google insights to check what the hottest topic in your niche is, and then use Wordtracker to narrow down your focus.

  • For example, if parent KW is Ford Explorer, once you type ‘ford explorer’ in google, you’ll get suggestions like ford explorer 2011, ford explorer sport trac, and so on. Then you can try to narrow down your focus to find long tail KWs, and cross check KW popularity in Wordtracker & Insight trends.
