Well, we’ve been discussing a lot about the basics of SEO, and covered almost all the preliminary things that one should do to set-up up a blog in a search-engine friendly way. However, what we’ve not discussed till this point of time, is the importance of self linking. So, let’s see how to unleash the power of self-links to improve your blog’s SEO.

What are Self Links?

When you publish a blog post, you can consider linking the keyword to the same page – this is called a ‘self link’ in simple terms. Now, let’s look at this aspect deeply; using the same text over and again, isn’t a good idea, since it increases the keyword density in your blog post unknowingly. So, you may consider using abbreviations of the keyword, or using its verb/plural form too.
Let me illustrate this point with the help of a simple example. In my latest blog post Insight to Direct to Home Television (DTH), I’ve targeted the keyword direct to home television, and given self link to the blog post using ‘direct to home television’ as anchor text. Next, let’s think about the internal linking strategy.

I’ve used DTH as anchor text to link to the corresponding technology category, and then I’ve used the main keyword to link to the homepage as well.

Importance of Linking to Homepage

When you’ve a blog like webfosys.com/blog with several directories, sub-domains, and thousands of blog posts, link to homepage from each blog post can be of great aid in improving the pagerank of the homepage of blog (provided all the individual blog posts have PR0 or higher page rank).
There are two ways of doing this – you can either keep adding link to homepage with appropriate anchor text within each blog post, or you may consider using a common by-line either at the beginning or end of each blog post, to save you from efforts of manually inserting links in every post.
The drawback of first linking methodology is the time and effort required to insert link in each blog post. On the other hand, the problem in latter case is that ALL links have same anchor text, which isn’t really appreciated by search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and often ignored, thereby resulting in wastage of your efforts.

Link Building is a major issue for SEO. Be Careful

So, consider inter-linking your blog posts, adding self links, and linking to your homepage too. Remember, you’ll be able to see the impact only after FEW MONTHS time!

  1. Another great article. I try to use inter links on all of my articles but often forget. I’m trying to make it a habit to go through old posts and update links 1 day a week but don’t always have time for it.
