Mobile Shopping on The Rise

online shopping 300x242 Mobile Shopping on The Rise E-retailers love the smartphone revolution.  Although smartphones make only 17% of the American population’s chosen mobile technology, mobile shopping increased many retailers’ profits this past holiday season.  Judging by unflagging popularity of online shopping—something unthinkable in the 90s when the Web was just for e-mailing co-workers—mobile shopping will continue to get bigger.

According to a study released by ForSee Results, 11% of the 10,000 visitors to popular e-retailer sites surveyed purchased a holiday gift or gifts via their mobile phone in 2010.  The previous year, a mere 2% accounted for purchases made via mobile device.  With a percentage jump that high, e-retailers are optimistic.  They also have history on their side.

Amazon, eBay, and other online stores and money makers weren’t always the behemoths they are today on the Internet.  Skeptics abounded in the late 90s, even when Amazon and eBay just three years after launching themselves into the webosphere collectively made $6.1 billion in online retail.  Even so, this $6.1 billion remained 0.2% of total retail according to a Garnet Survey.

Out of the 90s, e-commerce is only growing.  ABI Research reports that mobile online shopping in 2008 made $396 million in profits and $1.2 billion just a year later.  E-sales are expected to profit $223.9 billion in 2014 ($71.8 billion more than in 2010).  How much of this will be via mobile applications and storefronts is unknown, but e-retailers are optimistic.

Amazon added $1 billion to their profits in 2010 from mobile purchases alone, and eBay claims that shopping on its mobile application increased 134% this past holiday season.

The Contribution of Discounts, Sales, and Non-Commerce Mobile Apps

Mobile shopping Mobile Shopping on The Rise Online retail discounts and sales contribute to its popularity–it’s not rare to see web deals, coupon codes, and the like when shopping at a store’s dot com than through its physical doors.  Besides, there are no pushy attendants, competitive shoppers, or long lines at the checkout counter to deal with when shopping from the comfort of one’s own laptop.

With mobile shopping, the advantages only grow in number: you can shop on your commute home the moment you remember the item you desire rather than forgetting it on the commute and being unable to remember what it was you wanted when you finally get to your computer.

Mobile applications may work for retailers even outside the realm of e-commerce.  With the growing usage of mobile GPS and price comparison and related apps, mobile users become more informed of what retailers have to offer.  As long as it brings people to their doors or their websites, retailers probably don’t care whether it’s mobile technology or a paper cup telephone that’s being used.

Indeed its an interesting topic to discuss but the major fact which remains unchanged is that youths are the main contributors behind such market jump. Here is an interesting article http://www.dazeinfo.com/2011/01/11/global-youth-dominated-in-mobile-internet-and-messaging-trend-report/
