Guest article by Mr.Sathish from Techiemania. This is a gift for all our readers on account of our 3rd anniversary celebrations.

Thesis is a wonderful WordPress theme with an efficient HTML + CSS + PHP framework and easy-to-use controls. I would recommend this theme to anyone, since it is the best WordPress theme available out there. When you have Thesis with you, you don’t need to worry about optimizing your blog for search engines, since Thesis will take care of that work for you. All you need to do is “just add killer content”.

Adding a Social bookmarking widget to a WordPress blog is an essential one, since it will enable the blog readers to share the post in Social Media sites like Digg, Mixx, Twitter and Facebook. But one must take care on the location of the Social Bookmarking widget. Adding a Floating Bookmarking widget will be good for your blog since it will be visible to all your blog readers.

So here’s a simple tutorial on how to add floating Social Bookmarking Icons to your Thesis WordPress theme without any plugins. Just follow the steps given below and your Floating Social Bookmarking Widget will be ready within no time.

How to Add Floating Social Bookmarking Icons in Thesis WordPress Theme?

1. To get Started, Login to your WordPress admin panel and click Custom File Editor in Thesis Options.

3. Now download the file from here and add the code in custom_functions.php and click the save button.

The code, which I have given in the file has links for Twitter, Facebook, Delicious and StumbleUpon icons. You can add or remove codes according to the icons you want to be visible. Also, change the Twitter handle in the code with yours.

4. Once you added the above code to custom_functions.php, you need to configure their location. To do that just download the file from here and add the code in custom.css and click the save button.

Since I am using the default widget scripts for Icons, there is no need to add custom images for the Icons.

5. If everything goes right, you should see the widget in your single post page, similar to the screenshot below.

I do NOT use thesis theme. I had tried a WP plugin that was supposed to do the same effect (floating AJAX-based social media buttons). But the plugin messed up my theme and I had to uninstall it.

Any idea, if this thesis trick can work with other non-thesis themes? I’d love to have it on my theme!

You can use this trick in any wordpress theme. Just remove the function line and add the php code directly in your functions.php along with the css file in your stylesheet. It will work.

I agree with that. I see an emerging trend of companies coming out with paid plugins and themes. I have bought a few but it has to be really good.

@Giovanni Cappellotto The code which I have given here is working well for me and most others. There might be some other problem with your functions.php. Contact me at admin@techiemania.com with your details. I will solve the problem by myself.

Nice guest post, Sathish… This thing will not work effectively on full sized themes and it may look annoying, isn’t so ?

Floating icons seems cool at first but later become annoying… Your header icons look better. I’ll try that on my hellosingapore travel blog. Thanks for sharing!
