In my previous Article on MacBook Pro I reviewed regarding the features and performance characteristics of 13 inch model which is universally designed and much economical. Another model from Mac is the 15 inch model.
This one has the monitor size of 15 inches which is slightly bigger than the 13 inch notebook. This one is termed as the Mobile Computing Powerhouse by Apple.Pricing ranges from $1799-$2199.This model is further available in 3 varieties.

- $1999 model
- $2199 model
This model is classified into 3 distinct pricing ranges based on the processing speed and storage capacity.
- $1799 model has 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 320GB 5400-rpm hard drive.
- $1999 model has 2.53GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive.
- $2199 model has 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive.
Technical Specifications of 15 inch MacBook Pro:
Technical specifications for the three models of 15 inch MacBook Pro are same apart from the processor & HDD.
Size and Weight:
- Height : 0.95 inch (2.41 cm)
- Width : 14.35 inches (36.5 cm)
- Depth : 9.82 inches (24.9 cm)
- Weight : 5.6 pounds (2.54 kg)
Processor: It comes with 2.4GHz or 2.53GHz Intel Core i5 processors with 3MB shared L3 cache. Or 2.66GHz Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache.
Storage: 15 inch MacBook has the hard disk capacity of 320GB with 5400 rpm for the $1799 model and 500GB with 5400 rpm for the $1999 and $2199 models. All are serial ATA hard drives.
An optional 500GB 7200-rpm hard drive or 128GB; 256GB; 512GB hard drives can also be included with 15 inch model.
It also has 8x slot loading super drive ( DVD ±R DL /DVD±RW/CD-RW) which helps to burn discs very faster.
Graphics:
- This model is enriched with the new NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M integrated graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz configurations. Whers as it has 512MB GDDR3 memory on 2.66GHz configuration.
- It also contains Intel HD graphics of 256MB DDR3 memory shared with main memory.
- It supports Automatic Graphics Switching.
- It also supports Dual Display and video mirroring which simultaneously enables the full native resolution on the built-in display and upto 2560 x 1600 resolution on the external display.
- iSight Camera to capture high definition photos.
- Mini Display port to interface external display devices to MacBook Pro.
- Supports Turbo Boost feature which enables extensive gaming applications.
- Supports Hyper Threading technique which allows to run two different threads at the same time.
- It has built-in Integrated memory Controller to connect memory to the processor directly.

15 inch MacBook has the display of 15.4 inch (diagonal) back-lit glossy widescreen display which supports millions of colors.
Optional 15.4 inch LED back-lit widescreen display of 1680 x 1050 pixels can be interfaced which is available in glossy or antiglare.
It supports a number of resolutions with different aspect ratios which supports for various applications.
Connections and Ports:
MacBook Pro consists of ports which enables connections to various external devices and applications which include..
- Magsafe power port to connect to external power supply which serves long battery life.
- Gigabit Ethernet port which enables communication protocols for greater connectivity.
- One Firewire 800 port which supports wireless communication upto 800Mbps.
- Mini Display port which interfaces external display devices to MacBook.
- Two USB 2.0 ports which supports data transfer at the speed 480Mbps.
- SD card slot to enable data from memory cards.
- Audio in and Audio out slots to plug in audio devices.

The basic difference in port alignment of 13 inch MacBook Pro and 15 inch MacBook Pro is that the 13 inch model has a single Audio in/out port where as the 15 inch model has separate Audio in and Audio out ports.

- MacBook Pro supports Airport Extreme Wi-fi wireless networking (based on IEEE 802.11 n specification)
- It has Bluetooth 2.1 wireless technology with Enhanced Data Rate (EDR).
- It has 10/100/1000 Base-T Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45 Connector).
Digital Video Output ports:
15 inch MacBook Pro supports 4 video ports for enhanced video experience..These are optional ports which can be connected for advanced performance.
- DVI Output which uses Mini Display port to connect to DVI adapter.
- VGA Output which uses Mini Display port to connect to VGA adapter.
- Dual link DVI Output which uses Mini Display port to connect to Dual link DVI adapter which supports 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Diplay.
- HDMI Output uses a third party Mini Display port to connect to HDMI adapter.
Battery & Power:
15 inch MacBook contains built in 77.5 watt-hour lithium-polymer battery which supports long battery life for enhanced applications.
It gives upto 8-9 hours battery life if charged completely.

Apple has recently upgraded its Macbook Pro line of laptops. Among the most noticeable improvements, there’s the Intel Core i5/Core i7 Processor (CPU), the discreet Nvidia GT 330M graphics processor (GPU) and an even longer battery life (increased by 1hr to 3hrs, according to Apple -depending on the model). The old Macbook Pro laptops have been removed from the shelves, so there is little point in spending too much time comparing
I’ve had my 17 inch Macbook Pro for about 3 months now. While I’ve had some minor issues with it, overall it’s been great. I love how the keyword lights up so I can see at night. I’d recommend it to anyone who does design work.
The macbook pro is great. I’ve had only a minor issue with the battery so far, but something that Apple quickly fixed. Overall, it’s a great laptop.
